Bonhams Asia Week New York September Sales Total $9.72 Million

New YorkBonhams annual September Asia Week New York presented an exceptional array of museum-quality Chinese, Japanese, and Korean works of art, achieving a total of US$9.72 million across a series of sales. Leading the week was the Magnificent and Important Blue and White 'Boys' Jar and Cover, which sold for US$1.75 million. The week also saw outstanding results for Part II of Francine and Bernard Wald's collection of fine snuff bottles, with 99% lots sold.

Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art
September 15

The Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale strongly opened the marquee sale week by achieving US$6.64 million with 87% lots sold. The sale included 78 fine and exceptional, museum-quality works, with the standout lot being the Magnificent and Important Blue and White 'Boys' Jar and Cover, Jiajing six-character mark and of the period, which sold above estimate for US$1.75 million.

Additionally, other standout ceramics that performed well within the sale included a Superb Pair of Unique Famille Rose 'Chrysanthemum' Dishes, Yongzheng six-character marks and of the period which sold for US$1,512,500; as well as An Important and Massive Blue and White 'Scrolling Flowers' Vase, Yongzheng six-character mark and of the period, which sold for US$914,900, more than double its estimate.

Additional highlights include:

• A Magnificent and Large Olive-green-glazed 'Lotus' Vase and Cover, Northern Qi Dynasty, sold for US$406,900.

• A Fine and Rare Lime-ground Famille-Rose 'Lotus' Small Bottle Vase, Qianlong six-character seal mark and of the period, sold for US$279,900, more than triple its estimate.

The Francine and Bernard Wald Collection of Fine Snuff Bottles, Part II
September 15

Following the morning session sale on September 15, was The Francine and Bernard Wald Collection of Fine Snuff Bottles, Part II. The second part of the couple's distinguished collection more than doubled its high all-in value estimate and achieved US$770,688.

With 99% lots sold, over 74% of the lots in the sale performed well above their estimates. The top lot of the sale was a White Jade 'Bixi' snuff bottle 1740-1850, which surpassed its estimate eight-fold when it sold for US$32,000.

Additional highlights include:

• A Superb Chalcedony Agate 'Eagle and Bear' Snuff Bottle, Suzhou, School of Zhiting, 1730-1850, sold for US$28,160, more than 15x estimate.

• A Rare and Fine Chalcedony Brown and Green Agate 'Twin Dragons Amid Clouds' Snuff Bottle, Qianlong wheel-cut four-character mark and of the period, 1736-1795, sold for US$25,600, more than 11x estimate.

• A Fine Imperial Violet-Blue Opaque-White Glass 'Dragonfly and Lotus Pond' Snuff Bottle, Qianlong wheel-cut four-character mark and of the period, 1736-1795, sold for US$25,600, more than triple its estimate.

Classical and Modern Chinese Paintings
September 16

Two paintings by Qi Baishi (1864-1957), led the Classical and Modern Chinese Paintings sale on September 16. The top work of the sale, Pumpkins, exemplary of Qi Baishi's ability to combine calligraphic brushwork with the rhythmic patterns of the natural world, performed above estimate when it sold for US$79,240, while the artist's early landscape, Autumn Sunset, 1924, achieved more than triple is estimate when it sold for US$ 44,800. Overall, the sale achieved US$794,520.

Additional highlights include:

• Model Calligraphies from Ding Prefect (Ding Tie) Late Ming dynasty, sold for US$32,000.

Bird on Branch by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), from the collection of Chiang Yee (1903-1977) sold for US$30,720, more than double its estimate.

Fine Japanese and Korean Art
September 17

On September 17 the Fine Japanese and Korean Art sale was headlined by a Fine Inlaid-Iron Tetsubin (Tea Kettle for Sencha) Taisho (1912-1926) or Showa (1926-1989) era, by Asai Tokuzō (1885-Circa 1955) which surpassed its estimate over four-fold when it sold for US$66,540. Overall, the sale achieved US$1.12 million.

Additional highlights include:

• An Iron Jizai Okimono (Articulated Table Ornament) of a Snake, Meiji era (1868-1912), circa 1900 by Takase Kōzan (1869-1934), sold for US$57,600, more than double its estimate.

• Marijicheon (Marici), Joseon dynasty (1392-1897), 18th century, sold for US$57,600, more than 22x estimate.

• A Massive Tōmei-Jippō (Basse-Taille) and Moriage Cloisonné-Enamel Incense Burner, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century by KAWAGUCHI BUNZAEMON (1860-1912) sold for US$28,160, more than double its estimate.

Rounding out Bonhams marquee sale week was the Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Online sale, which closed on September 19, achieving US$396,582 with 90% lots sold.
