London – Bonhams' Blazing a Trail: Modern British Women auction marked its fifth anniversary with exceptional results, underscoring the growing recognition of pioneering British women artists. The sale continues to go from strength to strength, with collectors showing strong interest in works that have historically been underrepresented in the market.
The standout of the auction was Dod Procter R.A. (British, 1890–1972), whose evocative painting Girl in her Petticoat (68.6 x 43.2 cm) soared past its estimate of £15,000–£25,000 to achieve £406,800 - a new auction record for the artist. A celebrated member of the Newlyn School and Royal Academician, Procter's intimate portrayals of women continue to resonate deeply with collectors and institutions alike.
Also achieving a major milestone was Jessica Dismorr (British, 1885–1939), a key figure in the Vorticist movement. Her Self Portrait (55.4 x 40.1 cm), estimated at £15,000–£20,000, sold for £152,800, setting a new auction record for the artist. Dismorr's Girls in a Park also exceeded expectations, selling for £28,160 against an estimate of £6,000–£8,000, further highlighting the growing appreciation of her contribution to British modernism.
Grace Berry, Associate Specialist commented "We are thrilled by the exceptional results achieved in this sale, particularly for Dod Procter and Jessica Dismorr. Two artists whose contributions to British art history are increasingly being recognised and celebrated. The strong prices reflect a growing appetite among collectors for works by women artists whose legacies have long been underrepresented in the market."
