Edinburgh – An exceptional selection of significant works by some of Scotland's most beloved artists, are set to feature in Bonhams Scotland's upcoming Scottish Art auction. Two striking still life works by the famed Scottish Colourist Samuel John Peploe, alongside a collection of early, previously unseen paintings by Jack Vettriano, consigned by the artist's brother. The auction will take place in Edinburgh on 8th October 2025.
One of the most celebrated Scottish Colourists, Samuel John Peploe RSA (1871–1935) spent formative years studying and painting in France before returning to Scotland, where his bold use of colour and confident brushwork earned him lasting acclaim. The upcoming auction features two important oil paintings by Peploe, Still Life with Apples, Pears and Peaches, estimated at £180,000–£250,000 and Japanese Vase with Pink Roses, estimated at £250,000–£350,000.These works exemplify Peploe's mastery of composition, colour, and contrast – all hallmarks of his unique and influential style.
In parallel, Bonhams is honoured to offer a remarkable collection of early paintings by Jack Vettriano OBE (1951–2025)following the artist's death last year. Born Jack Hoggan, Vettriano began painting in the 1970s after receiving a set of watercolours as a birthday gift. His early works, often signed under his birth name, reflect the self-taught beginnings of an artist who would go on to become one of Scotland's most recognised and commercially successful painters. These early works, dating from Vettriano's twenties and thirties, provide rare insight into the formative period of his career. Highlights include Flowers in a Brown Vase (late 1970s), estimated at £4,000–£6,000 signed Hoggan, and Lonely Man in Big City (unframed), estimated at £1,200–£1,800 which is believed to be one of the first oils he ever painted. Even more uniquely, the reverse of and Lonely Man in Big City, includes a landscape portrait of Peter Vettriano, the artist's grandfather. These pieces, consigned directly from the artist's brother, offer collectors a unique opportunity to explore the origins of Vettriano's distinctive visual language.
May Matthews, Managing Director of Bonhams Scotland, commented: "We are delighted to have these Peploe still lifes returning to Edinburgh. These works display all of the characteristics for which Peploe became celebrated in his quest to paint the perfect still life. Meticulously planned and executed, they exemplify his unique and distinctive style as he broke away from tradition, occupying a position at the forefront of Modernism in Britain. Additionally, in the same auction we are offering a fascinating collection of early Hoggan's before he became Vettriano. These works tell a fascinating story of how a completely untrained amateur went onto become one of Scotland's most famous artists. We expect considerable interest."
