New York – Bonhams' The Perfect Jewelry Box: Jewels from an Impressive Southern California Collection achieved exceptional results on March 8 in New York. The top lot was a magnificent 35.00 carat LEVIEV emerald-cut, type IIa, D color ring, which soared past its estimate selling for $2.7 million.
The sale achieved white glove results for the 119-lot collection, which featured exceptional pieces spanning the decades from Art Deco to modern contemporary, and brought in a total of $8.1 million overall, with 100% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.
"It was a privilege to present this collection, which had such a diverse mix of period jewels, rare gemstones, and exceptional white diamonds," commented Caroline Morrissey, Bonhams Director and Head of Jewelry in New York. "Leading the sale were three type IIa, D color diamonds all over 10 carats, which is extremely rare, and we were delighted today's results reflected the quality of the pieces offered."
The 22.10 carat oval diamond ring sold for $1.6 million, against an estimate of $900,000 - 1,500,000 and the 11.37 carat square emerald-cut diamond ring, sold for $800,000, against an estimate of $350,000 - 550,000.
Other notable highlights:
• An exceptional sapphire and diamond platinum ring, rectangular cut 24.00 carat sapphire is of Sri Lankan origin. Sold for $328,000. (Estimate: $200,000-300,000).
• A significant, Art Deco gem-set, diamond, and enamel tassel necklace by Mauboussin, France, circa 1920. Sold for $270,000. (Estimate: $150,000-250,000).
• A Van Cleef & Arpels diamond 'Envol' necklace with openwork butterfly. Sold for $202,000. (Estimate: $60,000-80,000).
• A striking emerald and diamond ring set with a rectangular-cut emerald of Colombian origin within an emerald-cut and oval-shaped diamond frame. Sold for $158,000. (Estimate: $60,000-90,000).
• A pair of important Cartier Art Deco diamond and emerald earrings, circa 1920. Sold for $145,000. (Estimate: $50,000-80,000).
• A diamond and emerald bracelet of a central line of twelve graduated square-cut emeralds, interspersed with emerald-cut diamonds. Sold for $71,000. (Estimate: $50,000-70,000).
