註:錢瘦鐵的山水畫早年取徑黃山派,對石濤更是心追手摹。建國後入川蜀,遊三峽,上青城,經秦嶺而達西安,作品得益於川、陝山河,氣勢雄渾,筆墨蒼潤,富有生活氣息。此幅《雪村羣羊》是錢瘦鐵1961年的晚年之作。既是一幅山水畫,也是一幅風俗畫。描繪白雪皚皚寂靜的北方山村,一鮮族穿着的牧羊人,清晨去放牧抑或是傍晚歸牧景象。畫中的景物安排,豐滿充實。畫家巧妙利用藉地爲雪之方式,地面、山石、屋頂上留白,小路兩邊樹林梢頂、天空處亦有一綫不規則留白,故畫面雖滿,卻無逼仄滯悶之感。小路兩邊大樹參天。樹林處理,極爲精彩,左邊濃密,右邊稀疏,形成疏與密之反差對比。前景羣羊,緩行於小路上,牧人隨行其後。十八隻羊,姿態各異。錢瘦鐵二三十年代一度在日本居住,與橋本關雪有「東亞二傑」之稱,故其作品受日本和西方繪畫影響。構圖上,藉鑒西畫對於景深之處理方法,道路兩旁樹林和崎嶇小路之安排、處理,皆使畫面具有焦點透視之空間效果和縱深感。除了使用傳統的藉地爲雪表現方法外,還以白粉點染出樹木枝幹上之積雪。在中國畫中,對白粉之使用十分慎重,用之不當會令畫面顯得匠氣;用之得當,則又被稱爲「救命白」,使畫面百倍生輝。錢瘦鐵大膽使用白粉,且用粉較重,運用靈活自然,無匠氣滯濁之弊,給人一種真實感畫中景緻皆從深入生活寫生得來。將傳統畫法和西方繪畫相結合,表現手法雖然較為寫實,但筆墨趣味源於傳統綫條強調書法用筆,山石的畫法不全拘於披麻皴、斧劈皴。既有筆有墨,又具空間透視和立體感等效果。整個畫面採用冷色,樹幹、樹枝上野果等處,使用了赭石、硃砂、硃標等暖色,避免了一味冷色。整幅作品生活氣息濃厚,成功地營造出北方山村生活景象,使人置身於冰天雪地山村中。——王健撰寫
