China Observed Through Western Artists' Eyes

Works on Paper from Martyn Gregory, London
31 October – 10 November 2025

"This sale was first conceived as my final catalogue, catalogue 104, after a career dealing in China Trade paintings spanning six decades. It explores the works of Western artists during the 19th and 20th centuries, through the specific lens of works on paper. Artists represented include George Chinnery (1774-1852), Marciano Antonio Baptista (1826-1896), Auguste Borget (1808-1877) and Vera Southby (1895-1987). I was fortunate to have met Vera Southby in the 1970s. Her work is scarce and it is exciting to find a body of her working drawings. Overall, the sale showcases the range, artistry and cultural dialogue that occurred in works painted by Western artists during a fascinating period of China's recent history. We are grateful to Terri Cheung, former Assistant Curator at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, for her detailed historical and biographical research on the following entries."
