A large Sumidagawa 'monkey' vase

Inoue Ryosai (1828-1899) or Inoue Ryosai II (1845-1905), Meiji era (1868-1912)
The stout baluster jar raised on a flared foot and profusely decorated with a myriad of monkeys gathered around a thatched hut to see the Buddha flanked by Ananda and Kashyapa, each high-relief monkey applied to the partially glazed surface creating an exuberant, richly textured effect, all below the splash-glazed neck and everted rim, sealed Inoue Kyosai on one corner of the surface.
