Zhang Daqian (1899-1983)

Orchid, 1979
Ink and color on paper, now mounted for framing, titled zhi lan bing xiu, inscribed and dated liushiba nian xia yue (1979, summer) dedicated to Fangyu, signed Daqian Jushi and with three artist's seals reading jiwei, Zhang Yuan, and Daqian Jushi.
14 x 11 1/4in (35.5 x 28.5cm)

Footnotes

The dedication to "Fangyu" likely refers to Wang Fangyu 王方宇 (1913-1997), the noted art collector, calligrapher, professor of Chinese language at Yale University, and premier scholar on the art of the painter Bada Shanren (1626-1705). Zhang Daqian and Wang Fangyu were lifelong friends; among the paintings dedicated by the artist to Wang Fangyu are a "White-Robed Guanyin" and a landscape titled "Cliff by the River", both published in Johnson, Mark Dean and Fan Jeremy Zhang, Chang Dai-Chien: Painting from Heart to Hand, San Francisco: Asian Art Museum Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture, 2019, pp. 38-38, 42-43.
