Zhao Shao'ang was a native of Guangzhou. At the age of sixteen, he began to study painting under Gao Qifeng, one of the Lingnan School masters. Zhao Shao'ang is considered one of the best flower-and-bird painters of his era. Blending impressionistic brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and his distinctive angular lines, Zhao has created a sense of animation in all his subjects.

This painting has captured the vivid motion of a frog leaping into a pond. As the focal point of the painting, the frog is painted with brightly colored details. The red spot at its cheek further adds to the vitality of the image. The grass at the back is more loosely painted, rendering an atmosphere of a misty spring morning by the water.
