Ren Yu was from Xiaoshan (now Hangzhou), and used the courtesy name Lifan. He was born into an artist's family -- his father was the famous Shanghai School artist Ren Xiong (see lots 24, 25). Though Ren Yu followed his father's path, and became a talented painter himself, he never studied with his father as Ren Xiong passed away when Ren Yu was only four years old. He was a very versatile artist, who not only excelled at landscape painting, but also figures (see lot 33), and flower and bird paintings.
