Wang Li was originally from Suzhou, but he relocated to Shanghai to be a professional painter. His energetic and colorful style of bird and flower painting were recognized and promoted by Zhang Xiong (1803-1886), and Wang Li became influential on the emerging Shanghai School. In 1862, the year this album was created, he was one of the founding members of the Duckweed Flower Club (Pinghuashe), an elite Shanghai painting social group. Among Wang Li's students was Zhu Cheng (1826-1899) (see lot 26).
