The centerpiece of this handscroll is the Villa of Cloud Watching Mountain (Wangyun shanzhuang), a garden estate belonged to the patron of the work - Zhang Xianghe. Zhang Xianghe was a prominent Qing official, who used the courtesy name Yuanqin, and sobriquets Shiling, Fahua shanren. He was a native of Songjiang (today's Shanghai).
The handscroll comprises five sections by various artists. It starts with Zhang Xianghe's own title piece. Then in the first painting section, Yu Zouyan created a panoramic-like view, in which simultaneously presented the architecture and the surrounding landscape. In contrast to Yu Zouyan's work, Yan Bing featured the eight views of the villa in album leaf format individually. The eight views correspondent to the eight poems composed by Zhang Xianghe, mounted before Yan Bing's painting.
To accompany the visual presentation of the villa, Zhang Xianghe further invited his friend to write poems and essays on the same subject. In the first essay, Wu Jiamao not only admired the beauty of the villa like others did, but also praised the filial piety of Zhang Xianghe – he built the villa so that his mother could enjoy the tranquility.
The Villa of Cloud Watching Mountain was destroyed during the wars of the 20th century. However, this handscroll survived the turmoil and preserves the rich history of garden design of the Jiangnan region.
