Lu Yingxiang, a late Qing dynasty artist, who used the courtesy name Jingtao, was born in Fengjing in Zhejiang province and later lived in Shanghai. The colophon by Xu Yunlin written in 1886 at the end of this scroll corresponds to what has been recorded about the artist's life: Lu Yingxiang was talented in reading, writing, and painting. His painting followed Huang Gongwang, Ni Zan, and the Four Wangs. If encountering an ancient masters' work, Lu Yingxiang would not hesitate to purchase it even if he had to pay a hefty price. Many contemporary artists were his friends and they would often gather at his home.

This intimate landscape handscroll was painted over many years. After he finally completed it 1885, Lu Yingxiang presented it to Xu Yunlin. Confined in this remarkably long, yet diminutive height scroll, the artist was able to overcome the spatial challenges, creating a rhythmic river and mountain scene. Following the dynamic brushwork when unrolling the scroll, viewers would be able to immerse themselves in the same journey as the artist.
