Rare Massive Kesi and cut velvet hanging banner

Early Qing dynasty elements
The central panel of cut velvet with a pair of ascending and descending dragons amid clouds and bordered with scrolling lotus, with five joined early 18th century kesi panels above and below the 18th century cut velvet panel, all surrounded by a late 17th/early 18th century pale blue silk embroidered border sewn with dragons, mythical beasts and auspicious imagery, with a second exterior border in brocade weave silk.

This sublime hanging banner is an assemblage of numerous fine sections of early Qing dynasty Chinese textiles. The fabrics were likely joined to be hung in a Buddhist temple setting, the luxurious fabrics originally received by the temple as donations from wealthy patrons. The cut velvet central element is a unusual survivor, given its large size. The inner kesi surround were likely taken from chair covers, and the blue ground embroidered border perhaps for a bed cover.
