Scott, Oct 12th 1905" on the front free endpaper of volume 1, photogravure frontispieces, numerous maps and plates (including 12 coloured reproductions after Dr. Wilson), a folding map in pocket at the end of each volume, with the publisher's slip tipped into volume 1, occasional light spotting, publisher's blue cloth with gilt medallions on sides, t.e.g., joints neatly refurbished, preserved in purpose-made solander box [Conrad, p.121; Rosove 286; Spence 1051; Taurus 41], 8vo, Smith Elder, 1905

A PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED ON THE DAY OF PUBLICATION of "the ablest and most interesting record of travel to which the present century has yet given birth" (The Spectator, 14 October, 1914, quoted in Scott Journals. Scott's Last Expedition, 2005, edited by Max Jones, p.xxiv).

Provenance: Gifted by Scott to Mrs Schuster, wife of Arthur Schuster, who was Beyer Chair of Applied Mathematics, and Langworthy Professor of Physics at Manchester University. "Scott consulted Schuster when arranging his scientific plan of both the Discovery and Terra Nova missions" (Hannah Hulme, Mancunian Matters, 2012, online resource).
