Private Gustavus Adolphus Walters was born at Halifax, near York. He attested for the 13th Foot at Leeds on the 2nd May 1840. He remained a Private throughout his service career and was Imprisoned for a number of times over his conduct. He served at Gibraltar, Crimea, Cape of Good Hope, East Indies.
He was discharged as a result of a Medical Board that took place on the 16th September 1861, having disease of the liver and dysentery as a result of service in various climates. He was discharged at Chatham on the 10th June 1862.
His service papers confirm medal entitlement for Jellalabad and capture of Cabul, Crimea with clasp for Sebastopol, Turkish Medal, Indian Mutiny Medal.
