Coins, Medals and Banknotes

Bonhams offers coins, medals and paper money through our sister company Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers. Bruun Rasmussen holds more than 25 Coins auctions each year in Copenhagen and online, with prices ranging from €100 to €500,000.

Founded by Arne Bruun Rasmussen, an avid coin collector and numismatist, Coins auctions have a cherished place in the auction house's rich history. Their highly experienced department handles both collections and individual numismatic rarities, with specialities including ancient coins (Greek, Roman and Byzantine), Viking, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavia, Germany, Great Britain, United States and China – as well as gold coins, pre-1800 world coins and pre-1930 world paper money.

The department also works with a broad range of numismatics – with numismatics books and cabinets being of very high interest – as well as ethnographic types, tokens, advertising coins and numerous other forms of struck metal, dies for striking and other production equipment, jetons, piggy banks, gold and silver bars, shares and bonds.

Recent exceptional results achieved by the department include 10 Ducats 1652, sold for DKK2.35 million in November 2022; 500 cash notes from Qing-dynasty China, 1854, sold for DKK1.4 million in November 2017; and a Guldridder (Rosenobel), sold for DKK900,000 in April 2022.
