Sergeant John Duett was born at Great Gounsley, near Grantham, Lincoln. He was a Labourer by Trade. He enlisted into the 44th Foot at Sheffield on the 10th January 1823. He volunteered for the 16th Foot on the 4th November 1830, promoted to Corporal on the 24th September 1835, Sergeant on the 26th January 1839. He volunteered for the 3rd Foot on 1st January 1840 and was promoted to Sergeant one month later. He was confined on the 29th April 1845 and was tried by Regimental Court Martial on the 3rd May 1845, he was sentenced to be reduced, Punishment remitted by Commanding Officer. He was released to Sergeant on the 29th April 1845 until 16th May 1845. He was discharged on the 24th June 1845, as a result of ill health caused by service in India.
