Footnotes

M.C. London Gazette 26.7.1918.

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He handled his company with the greatest efficiency. On one occasion he fought a severe rearguard action, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and extricating his company from a difficult position, with the enemy close on his right rear. His courage, cheerfulness, and untiring energy were a brilliant example to all ranks.

The lot comes with a framed photograph of him in uniform, various newspaper articles/cuttings, copy of War Graves France 622-623.

Second Lieutenant John Arthur Greenshields was the son of John M. and Christina Gay Greenshields of Newlands, Glasgow. He was killed in action on the 27th May 1915, and is buried in the Marfaux British Cemetery.

He was the twin brother of Second Lieutenat D.M.Greenshields (see Lot 154), and brother of Private Frederick Moodie Greenshields, Highland Light Infantry, who was killed in action on the 1st November 1916.
