The inscription states that the couplet was made for a fundraising exhibition organized by the artistic and literary group shuhua wenxueshe 書畫文學社. Shuhua wenxueshe was formed in Hong Kong in 1927, and had held an exhibition in neighboring Macao in December 1932, during which works by Zhao Shao'ang, Huang Shaoqiang, and Gao Jianfu's brother Gao Qifeng were sold to raise funds for refugee relief in China's embattled northeast region.
