A superbly carved white jade circular table screen
18th/19th century
The large circular plaque masterfully worked on one side with varying levels of relief to depict an immortal in a flowing robe holding a large peach, followed by two boys, one carrying a ruyi-form chime over his shoulder, the other with a large fish in his hands, walking along a zig-zag path within a grand mountainous scene with a waterfall, lush pine and plantain trees sheltering dual-roofed pavilions; the stone of semi-translucent even white hue.
7 13/16in (19.8cm) diameter

Provenance:
acquired in 1961 as per acquisition number A1961.1.2
The carving of the jade plaque carries two auspicious references: one is the most often seen theme of longevity, represented by the immortal holding a peach. The second theme, represented by one boy carrying a chime and another a fish, illustrates the rebus jiqing youyu (May there be a superabundance of auspicious happiness), as chime is qing in Chinese, a pun for jiqing (auspicious happiness), and fish is yu, the same pronunciation with the word for abundance in Chinese.
