Nils Nessim learnt about Oriental carpets from his extremely knowledgeable father, Jean Benschoam Nessim, who had emigrated from Bulgaria and settled in Sweden in the 1910s. Armed with this received wisdom, the young Nils Nessim, a true entrepreneur, soon developed a prospering business in Stockholm selling oriental carpets.

After the opening of several branches, Nils Nessim started an exclusive antiques shop in the best part of Stockholm. He travelled numerous times to China and his interest in Chinese art and antiques became well-known in Sweden.

In 1959, Nils Nessim managed to receive permission from the Chinese authorities to import antiquities into Sweden from China. Part of his collections of Chinese art and antiques had been exhibited in Swedish museums.
