Amsterdam-born Johan Rudolf Bonnet (1895-1978) was one of Bali's most influential foreign artists. After studying decorative painting at a technical high school, he specialised in drawing and painting in the academic tradition of the early 20th century at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. Bonnet left for Italy in 1920 and stayed mostly in Anticoli Corrado, south for Rome, for 8 years and it was in Italy where he first heard of Bali from the artist, Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp (1874-1950), who had documented the island's culture.
Bonnet arrived in Bali in 1929 and during his time there, he was well connected with Moscow-born German artist Walter Spies (1895-1942), Balinese royalty including Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910-1978) and helped to establish the Pita Maha Artists Association as well as Museum Puri Lukisan.
Using dark angular outlines and dramatic shadows, Bonnet created Lot 1264 Portrait of a Man in 1948. With an element of stylisation, this work recalls European modern art during the first half of the 20th century.
