Provenance: The Lea Family, and by descent for three generations
The earliest family connections to the Philippines date to 1910 when R. Eroles moved his photography studio from Barcelona to Manila, where it remained until the 1930s. His daughter Esperanza Lea (nee Eroles) and her husband were residents of Manila, and purchased Baguio Rice Fields and Lots 1224 and 1225 from the artist between 1944 and 1948. The painting of the Baguio Rice Fields was commissioned by the Lea family and depicts the view from the family's summer home in the mountains of Baguio. The image below is a copy of the original photo that was given to Amorsolo for the commission. The family relocated to California in 1949, where the paintings have remained.
F Amorsolo 1944
來源:
Lea
As one of the most important artists in the history of Philippine painting, Fernando Amorsolo was popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery of light. Born in Paco, Manila in 1892, he earned his degree in painting at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts in Manila in 1914 and was honoured as the First National Artist of the Philippines on 27 April 1972. He was offered a generous stipend to further his art education in Spain and it was in Madrid where he honed his skills and sourced major influences from the works of Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) and Joaquín Sorolla (1823-1923). Velázquez's superior brushwork, mastery of colour and painterly qualities inspired Amorsolo, while Sorolla's dexterous representation of people and landscapes using heightened sunlit colours and dramatic contrasts of light and shade of his native Spain deeply captivated him.
Despite his exposure to Western influences, Amorsolo was more drawn towards images of gentle rolling hills and verdant rice fields of the Philippines, than the cosmopolitan world of Europe. In Lot 1223 Baguio Rice Fields, Amorsolo deftly portrayed the majestic scenery with great luminosity.
