註:黃廷蛟(1917-2003),原籍廣東客家,筆名史馬,新加坡知名作家,1970年代開始為新加坡各報刊撰寫專欄。

林風眠自稱「好色之徒」,他對色彩的掌握已到達爐火純青的境界。這幅〈紅玫瑰〉有林風眠的靜物畫中慣用的黑背景,對比之下,令畫中的紅色和黃色更為奪目。他又將這兩種顏色交錯地置於畫中不同物品之上,色塊堆疊令整體結構環環相扣,柔和了鮮明色彩之間的衝突感。

林風眠在創作靜物畫時,一直探索平面空間中的幾何秩序。主體紅玫瑰佔了畫面一半位置,而左方塗上不同顏色的透明窗簾及藏在其後半隱半現的窗框,緩和了大花瓶的厚重。左下角的梨子看似隨意排列,卻能把觀者的視線從火紅的玫瑰上引開,平衡了整個畫面的結構。值得一提的是,本畫畫幅成長方形,不同林風眠一般的方紙構圖,突出了林風眠駕馭各種幾何形狀的能力。
