Major Beauchamp Colclough Urquhart was born on 20th July 1860, he was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. Ensign 104th Foot 14.1.1880, he exchanged to the 79th on 31.1.1880; Lieutenant 12.2.1881; Captain 2.11.1885; Major 6.4.1898.
He served in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 and was present at Tel-El-Kebir, and the Nile Expedition of 1884-85; throughout the operations of the Soudan Frontier Field force, 1885-86, being present at Kosheh during its investment, and at the engagement at Giniss; appointed A.D.C. to the Earl of Aberdeen, Governor General of Canada, in 1893; served in the Soudan Campaign of 1898 and was present at the battle of the Atbara, where he met his death. He fell whilst leading his company in the victorious assault on the Dervish position, displaying the greatest gallantry in the attack upon the Zeriba.
His last words were "Never mind me, lads; go on"
There is a memorial mural in Blyth Parish Church and the above words are inscribed upon it, and a further memorial tablet which was unveiled in the chapel of Government House, Ottawa on 4th July 1898, by the Earl of Aberdeen.
