Footnotes

I.D.S.M. London Gazette 5.7.1945.

On the night of 3 to 4 April 1945 the enemy made a determined attack on Frasimento proceeded by intense shelling and mortaring. A frontal attack was made on the section position commanded by No 25428 L/Hav Mohd Asharaf, but was beaten off and six enemy killed, L/Hav Mohn Asharaf was wounded in the arm. In spite of shelling he visited all his section posts, encouraging his men, distributing ammunition, bandaging the wounded, and making all preparations to withstand a further attack, which came in soon after. This attack, which came in from the rear was held off, but L/Hav Mohd Asharaf was wounded a second time and finally rendered unconscious by a third wound. The other two men in his trench were killed. By his coolness and example this NCO held his section together in spite of heavy losses, and it was undoubtedly due to his leadership and devotion to duty that his position was not captured.

Upgraded from an immediate MM recommendation.
