A Riot of Colourists at Bonhams Scottish Sale Bonhams Edinburgh
Amnesty International and Médecins Sans Frontières to benefit from sale of works by Peploe and Cadell

Edinburgh – Major international charities are set to benefit from the sale of works by two of the most renowned Scottish Colourists, Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) and Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883-1937), at Bonhams' annual Scottish Sale on Thursday 14 October in Edinburgh. Two works by Peploe, Still Life with Geranium (£150,000-250,000) and Red Rose (£100,000-150,000), will be sold in aid of Amnesty International. The proceeds of the sale of Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell's Still Life with Oranges, Lemons and an Apple (£100,000-150,000) and Still Life with Ranunculus (£100,000-150,000), will support the work of Médecins Sans Frontières.

Bonhams Scottish Art specialist May Matthews, commented: "These are four wonderful archetypal Colourist paintings. Peploe's Still Life with Geranium, in particular, is an important and rare example of his unique and distinctive style, as he broke away from tradition to occupy a position at the forefront of Modernism in Britain. It is suffused with his signature use of colour; bold, primary tones, encased with distinctive black outlines, inspired by his time living in Paris in the early 1910s. Cadell can lay claim to be the most elegant of the Colourists as epitomised by Still Life with Ranunculus with its palette of white, creams and black. The dramatic crop of the painting creates a highly modernist aesthetic and the overall effect of this daringly simplified still life is one of sophistication and elegance. It is a privilege to be offering such masterpieces in aid of two very worthwhile causes and we expecting a lot of interest."

The works will be on view at Bonhams New Bond Street, alongside 10 other Colourist paintings being offered in The Scottish Sale, from 25 - 29 September. The works will then be on public view at Bonhams, 22 Queen Street Edinburgh from 9 -14 October.
