Picasso's fascination with Antiquity was an ongoing theme throughout his career. It was by copying Greek statues that he learnt to draw during his academic training in Spain. On many occasions, he refers to the Kouroï, ancient Greek sculptures representing young soldiers with stylised hairstyles and well-defined muscles, before developing a true passion for the Antiquity after his stays in Rome, Naples and the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

This portrait, executed in 1914, employs similar elements, such as the muscular neck and the antique hairstyle, while also insisting on the importance of the line and the subject. The strength and the beauty of this face reveal once again Picasso's talent for rendering an expression vibrant in just a few strokes.
