Two Chinese Gentlemen Conversing
Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th century
Ink, color, and gold on silk, originally mounted as a hanging scroll, now framed and glazed, depicting two Chinese gentlemen in close conversation while holding hands, the left gripping a folding fan with a painting of flowers and grasses, the right's hand hidden by a hat; their garments meticulously painted, the right of near-eastern printed fabric with a floral design and the left with embroidered floral design; with two seals, one reading Hanzan.

Matsukawa Hanzan was born in Osaka, and specialized in surimono and illustrating books.
