Footnotes

The Sat Sai of Bihari Lal, who was a late-17th-century poet at Amber and at the court of Shah Jahan, is in the tradition of religious texts exploring the romance of Radha and Krishna, containing couplets on love, devotion and moral lessons. For other examples from this series see, Kamrisch, Painted Delight: Indian Paintings from Philadelphia Collections, 1986, pp. 102 & 178, no. 95; and Seitz, Orchha, Datia, Panna, Vol. II, 2015, pp.220-45, nos.59.1-59.10 (therein reattributing the series to Datia, c.1800-10).
