Wang Ti (active 16th century) attempted to revive the Zhou ritual in playing arrow vase in his Touhu yijie (The Disciplines of Playing Touhu). He noted that before and after the game, there must be a team playing lugu or 'drum of Lu' in an ancient tempo which was said to be inherited from Confucius' time. Drums were usually placed on a stand of one, two or three legs. Drum stand of six legs appeared to be seen in jingyun dagu only.

The present drum stand might be used in the jingyun dagu, a drumbeat performance popular in Hebei and Beijing, used in singing of short episodes since the 19th century. Unlike other folding drum stands which usually are hinged with three legs, jingyun dagu drum stand consists of six long legs, forming a higher and stable stand for the standing performer.

The black-lacquered drum stands can be traced back to Southern Song dynasty. Compare with a black lacquered drum stand depicted in the Zuju Tu (Illustration of Dramas), Southern Song dynasty, in the Palace Museum Collection, illustrated in Zhongguo yinyue wenwu daxi Beijing juan (Compendium of Chinese Musical Relics: Beijing), Shijiazhuang, 1999, p.241.
