Jonathan Dowling

Jonathan Dowling is Director of Clocks, Watches & Scientific Instruments at Bonhams Skinner. His expertise spans 18th and 19th century American and European clocks, nautical and maritime art and antiques, scientific instruments, and assorted mechanical curiosities. He has a passion for vintage watches, particularly 1950-70s tool watches, as well as early American clocks such as the likes of the Willard family and rural clockmakers of Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine.

Since joining the department in 2010, Jonathan has overseen some exceptional sales including a world auction record for a Tornek-Rayville TR-900 Dive Watch, sold for $123,000 in 2017. Under his leadership, Bonhams Skinner has offered nine rare Tornek-Rayville TR-900 Dive Watches since 2015, more than any other auction house.

Jonathan studied Fine Art with a focus in portraiture at du Cret School of Art and Design in New Jersey, before beginning to follow his passion for woodworking. Prior to joining Bonhams Skinner, he owned a private furniture restoration business and built early American-style furniture, as well as his own contemporary designs. His reproduction of a Philadelphia Queen Anne tilt-top tea table was featured in Fine Woodworking magazine.
