Gareth Williams
Departmental Director
Contemporary Art

In 2000 Gareth took over as head of the innovative 'Futures' sales format, a pioneering department, launched by Bonhams in the 1990s, which focused on the emerging fields of Post-War & Contemporary Art, Contemporary Ceramics, and Modern Design. These sales later evolved into the Vision 21 brand which broadens its focus to include prints and photographs, completing the notion of the modern interior. Within 12 months of Gareth's involvement the sale totals tripled.

As a proven commercial innovator, Gareth launched the highly successful 'Urban Art' auctions, an event which the Observer magazine listed as one of the fifteen defining moments of 2008, and which was instrumental in establishing the auction market for works by Banksy.

As well as writing for numerous art publications, Gareth co-wrote and self-published a book on design, art, architecture, and culture in London during the 80s and 90s, and in 2017, curated a ground-breaking exhibition on The Colony Room, the legendary Soho members club which counted some of the UK most celebrated artists amongst its members. The exhibition, in conjunction with Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, showcased major works by Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, Peter Blake, Michael Andrews, R.B.Kitaj, and Richard Hamilton, all loaned from the museum's prestigious collection.
