Charles O'Brien has worked in the auction industry for nearly 30 years. He graduated with a Masters degree from St Andrews University in 1982 and joined a major London auction house where he worked in the picture department for 9 years.

In 1992 he joined Bonhams as Head of 19th Century Paintings and has been a director of the company for the past ten years. He has been responsible for the discovery of a number of highly important pictures including a stunning portrait of a child by John Singer Sargent that sold in New York for $2.4m. Recently Charles set a new auction record for a watercolour by Archibald Thorburn when Peacock and Peacock Butterfly sold for £252,000 in July 2011.
