Bonhams Hong Kong Presents 'Rebirth Wang Su Solo Exhibition'

Wang Su, Born in Flowers, 2022, Oil on canvas, 140 x 155 cm

14 July – 5 August 2022
Bonhams Hong Kong Saleroom

From 14 July to 5 August, Bonhams Hong Kong presents Rebirth: Wang Su Solo Exhibition, a selling exhibition of a new painting series by the contemporary Chinese artist. The exhibition showcases 15 works of oil on canvas and linen, via which Wang explores the harmony between herself as an artist and the elemental world in rich and varied manifestations: stars, jungles, breezes, deserts, flame and flora. The subject, often rendered in curvaceous lines, carries a uniquely feminine sentiment, while also blended with a hint of mystic exoticism. In fact, this motif of contrast runs through the entire series: each painting is both gentle and intense at once, discreetly concealing the artist's arcadian sensibility beneath the glaringly saturated hues. In a transient world of nature, her thoughts are lingering.

Cindy Lim, Bonhams Senior Specialist and Head of Sale of Modern and Contemporary Art commented: "To look at Wang's paintings is to be reminded of Georgia O'Keeffe, whose radical, enlarged depiction of flowers redefined the modern symbol of motherhood and generosity. But Wang's works, also with a bold and direct take towards plants and nature at large, tell of something altogether different: she seeks to express, and nature is both her language and her listener. These 15 works are the visual transcript of their dialogues. You have to be present to listen with your eyes."
