Bonhams Hosts Barkitecture Sale at Goodwoof

Goodwood - Bonhams, auction partner for Goodwood, which has staged many record-setting motor car sales at the West Sussex estate, is to host The Barkitecture Sale, featuring a collection of 21st century kennels designed by leading architects, at the inaugural Goodwoof event, 28 and 29 May.

A two-day celebration of canines, Goodwoof will present a programme of activities for dogs and dog lovers, ranging from sheepdog trials to doga (yoga for dogs).

At the heart of the event is Barkitecture presented by Mastercard, an architectural exhibition featuring a bespoke one-off collection of 21st century dog kennels designed by the greatest names of architecture, from Sir Michael Hopkins to Foster & Partners. The creations will be judged by a panel of creative industry luminaries led by Kevin McCloud MBE.

Following the event, the Barkitecture kennels will be auctioned by Bonhams on site at Goodwood in a live sale on Sunday 29 May, with all proceeds being donated to Goodwoof's chosen charity, Dog's Trust. Submitted entries include:

Love From by Jony Ive & Marc Newson, estimate £2,500 – 3,500

Love From by Jony Ive & Marc Newson, estimate £2,500 – 3,500
The partnership said: "We absolutely adore our dogs, so this was an irresistible invitation. Designing a home for Dave Ive and Scruff Newson saw us develop a form that is an extrusion of the essential icon of a traditional kennel."

Dome-Home by Foster + Partners, estimate £2,500 – 3,500

Dome-Home by Foster + Partners, estimate £2,500 – 3,500
Dome-Home features a geodesic shell structure inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller. Constructed from engineered cherry wood, it reimagines canine luxury by creating a comfortable kennel, hand-built by master furniture maker, Benchmark, who describe the piece as the most challenging they have ever made

The bowl-shaped interior has a flexible removable padded fabric liner that closely follows the geometry of the shell, creating a snug yet practical interior.

Dog Pod by Mark Gorton for Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners, estimate £2,000 – 3,000

Dog Pod by Mark Gorton for Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners, estimate £2,000 – 3,000
Influenced by the designer's son's love of Star Wars Dog Pod offers space-age style and comfort to its canine resident. Adjustable lunar landing pad feet enable the unit to be raised off the ground during colder weather whilst allowing better air circulation and cooling on warmer days. The kennel's hexagon entrance door, when lowered, transforms into a starship-style boarding ramp. The Dog Pod's futuristic adjustable aluminium canopy can slide forward to create a shaded alfresco dining area or a canine relaxation zone.

Other designs include Bonehenge designed by Bird Portchmouth Russum, where bones forged from timber encapsulate a perfect dog's den; Doge's Palace by Linley, a Gothic-style plywood palazzo, and Haysom Ward Miller's imaginatively curated canine office suite, Rolo's Office Doghouse.

Naturally, the setting for the Bonhams auction and the wider Goodwoof event will be The Kennels on the Goodwood estate. Formerly housing the estate hounds, designed by 18th century architect James Wyatt, the Kennels were widely considered the most luxurious doghouse in the world at the time.

Tim Schofield, Head of Department, Bonhams Motoring UK, said: "Having been auction partner to Goodwood for more than two decades, Bonhams is always pleased to support the estate's new ventures – whether for four wheels or four legs.

The Bonhams team – particularly the dog owners among us - are greatly looking forward to Goodwoof and are delighted to support the Dog's Trust with the Barkitecture auction."
