Bonhams Appoints India Phillips as UK Managing Director

London - Bonhams announces the appointment of India Phillips as Managing Director, Bonhams UK from January 2022. India has been Bonhams Global Head of Impressionist and Modern Art since 2018, during which time her department achieved a number of world record prices, including £7m for La fête d'anniversaire, a highly important masterpiece by the Japanese-French artist Léonard Foujita. India succeeds Patrick Masson who has been appointed Managing Director for Bonhams Europe to lead Bonhams' rapidly expanding European business.

India Phillips joined Bonhams in 2014 as Head of Bonhams Impressionist and Modern Art Department in London and was promoted to Global Head four years later. She has been responsible for the sale of many remarkable pieces including Figura de perfil (La Hermana Ana María), a rare and important work by Salvador Dalí, Auguste Rodin's L'Eternel Printemps, which set a new world record at auction for a second state casting of the statue, Dalí's landmark diptych Couple aux têtes pleines de nuages that achieved £8.1m, and La fête d'anniversaire by the Japanese-French artist Léonard Foujita, which sold for a new world auction record price for the artist. India has also overseen the sale in New York of Picasso's Femme au Béret Mauve and Torse nu dans les nuages by René Magritte, as well as pioneering sales such as In the Mind's Eye: Surrealist Sale and Encore: Modern Art on Stage featuring the world's first ballet NFTs created by the celebrated ballerina, Natalia Osipova.

Raised in Edinburgh, India studied History of Art at Cambridge University. She developed her interest in Impressionist and Modern art while working at the Peggy Guggenheim Institute in Venice and as a researcher at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Before joining Bonhams, India was Deputy Director of Prints and Multiples at Sotheby's London and, prior to that, Associate Director of the Impressionist and Modern Art Department of Christie's in London.

India Phillips commented: "It is a great honour to have been asked to take on this exciting role. Ever since joining Bonhams my aim has been a relentless focus on excellence – sourcing works, and holding sales, of the very top quality. It's a philosophy I intend to carry into my new post. Bonhams has just enjoyed its most successful results for many years, and I am relishing the challenge of maintaining and exceeding that success in 2022 and beyond."

Bruno Vinciguerra, Bonhams Chief Executive Officer, said: "India has been a highly effective leader of Bonhams Global Impressionist and Modern Art department and I am delighted that she has accepted this important position. Along with her experience of working with clients at the highest level, she brings to the role her deep knowledge and expertise, business acumen, and her ability to inspire others to fulfil their potential. I am very much looking forward to working with her in this new capacity."
