All Wrapped Up:
It's a Wrap on Bonhams Christo & Jeanne-Claude Sale in New York

New York – As their legacy lives on in Paris with L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, the artist duo Christo (1935-2020) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) were also celebrated in Bonhams special Wrap it Up: The Legacy of Christo & Jeanne-Claude sale on Thursday, September 30 in New York. Offering an array of mixed media pieces, prints and sketches for large-scale projects, the 102-lot sale was 82% sold by lot and 83% sold by value.

The auction had works from all the major projects (both realized and not realized) by the Christo and Jeanne-Claude, spanning the arc of their lives. Among the highlights were the sculpture Wrapped Bouquet of Roses from 1993, which sold for $20,312, a Partial Panel, from Running Fence, Project for Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, 1976, which sold for $1,147, and a lithograph of L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, currently on view in Paris, which sold above its high estimate for $5,737. The top lot was The Floating Piers (Wrapped Book) with hardcover volume in slipcase (2 works), edition XX/XX, which sold for $31,562.

Bonhams Director of Prints and Multiples, Deborah Ripley, commented, "We are extremely pleased with the results of this sale. Christo and Jeanne-Claude were known for their larger-than-life public installations, which took years of planning – something we aimed to capture. It was wonderful that we were able to offer this retrospective auction at the same time as Christo's dream project, L' Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, finally came to fruition in Paris after his untimely death last year. It is no wonder bidders wanted to own a piece of the duo's incredible legacy."
