Bonhams Appoints Phyllis Kao US Director Of Business Development

The international auction house Bonhams is delighted to announce that Phyllis Kao is joining the company as US Director of Business Development. She takes up her new position with immediate effect and will be based in New York.

Phyllis will be responsible for cultivating new clients and securing property for all US sales. She will also look to expand on client engagement and partnership opportunities. As a certified appraiser and licensed auctioneer, Phyllis brings vast experience in the art industry to this new role.

Prior to joining Bonhams, Phyllis was a specialist in the Chinese Works of Art department at Sotheby's New York as well as a principal auctioneer for the company. She regularly took sales bilingually in English and Mandarin and continues to auctioneer at benefit events and fundraising galas. Among many notable achievements, Phyllis facilitated the consignment of a late Tang Dynasty gilt-bronze Buddhist figure that sold for over $2 million, a highlight of New York Asia Week in March 2019. She was also instrumental in bringing to market the recent Metropolitan Museum of Art deaccession, including works from the renowned Irving Collection.

Phyllis has lived and studied in the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, New York, Paris, and Taipei, and holds a bachelor's degree in History from Columbia University, New York.

Sherri Cohen, Head of Business Development, North America, commented: "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Phyllis to Bonhams newly formed business development team. Her breadth of knowledge and experience especially in the Asian Arts will bring a more strategic approach to relationship-building across our locations in North America, strengthening Bonhams already increasing market position."

Phyllis Kao said: "I am very pleased to be joining Bonhams at such an exciting time. I look forward to using my experience and knowledge of the art world to seek out new business opportunities as well as guide new and existing client relationships."
