Rush to Bonhams As Neil Peart's Drum Kit Sells For Five Times The Estimate

One of the great rock drummers of a generation, Neil Peart's Slingerland drum kit sold at Bonhams Los Angeles's online sale Music Memorabilia for $500,312, over 5 times the estimate. When Peart died on January 7th, 2020 the world's greatest drummers laid down their sticks for a day of quiet reflection. Stuart Copeland (The Police), Dave Grohl (Nirvana and Foo Fighters) and Lars Ulrich (Metallica) were amongst a crowd of musicians and music lovers alike to pay their respects to the influential Rush drummer.

Frequently mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Buddy Rich, John Bonham and Ringo Starr, Peart found fame in the Canadian prog-rock band Rush with whom he made 19 albums, which cumulatively sold 40 million copies worldwide. They are the 5th highest selling rock band in the USA of all time behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith with Peart, as both the drummer and lyricist, at the centre of their success.

Bonhams specialist Adam Stackhouse said: 'It was with great sadness the world said farewell to Neil Peart earlier this year. An undisputed drum legend known and idolised by millions around the globe; Peart's Slingerland kit is a piece of Rock and Roll treasure which deserved the high selling price it received. We are delighted that it sold for 5 times over its estimate and to be involved in the continuing the legacy of such an inspirational musician.'

Two weeks before Rush's first US tour Peart purchased a silver Slingerland drum kit from a local music store that he used on his first show with the band, opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann's Earth Band at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh on August 14, 1974. He continued to play this kit on the breakthrough Fly by Night, Caress of Steel, and 2112, considered among the greatest progressive rock albums of all time. The Slingerland kit went on the road for 5 consecutive US and Canadian tours and was seen by thousands of fans from 1974 through 1977; at which point Peart retired the kit.
