Granville Redmond's Striking Poppies And Lupine Highlights Bonhams Sale Of California & Western Art

Los Angeles – On August 4, Bonhams will offer important and fresh to the market works in the sale of California & Western Art. Featured are 161 works from notable collections of Barron Hilton, Russell Chatham and The Kelton Foundation, among others. The sale features strength in Southern California Impressionist landscapes, including significant works by Granville Redmond, John Frost, and Elmer Wachtel.

Leading the sale is the striking Poppies and Lupine by Granville Redmond (estimate: $100,000-150,000). Painted in 1914, this work is a prime example of Redmond's talents as the leader in painting elegant depictions of California wildflowers. Poppies and Lupine is symbolic of the tradition in early California plein air painting and distinguished Granville Redmond as one of the top Impressionist painters. Other fine landscapes include San Jacinto Mountain by John Frost (estimate: $60,000-80,000) and Elmer Wachtel's scenic view of The Grandeur that is California (estimate: $30,000-50,000).

The grandeur of the American West is also captured in works ranging from Edgar Payne's Canyon de Chelly (estimate: $50,000-70,000) to Birger Sandzén's In the Mountains, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado (estimate: $20,000-30,000). In addition, selections of Hawaiian art distinguish the sale, with works of classic Hawaiian imagery by Robert Eskridge's dazzling mural of Waikiki (estimate: $25,000-35,000) and Lloyd Sexton Jr.'s Yellow plumerias along the coast(estimate: $10,000-15,000).

Additional highlights include:
• William Alexander Griffith (1866-1940), Along the Laguna Coast, oil on canvas, painted in 1931 (estimate: $30,000-50,000)
• Arthur Grover Rider (1886-1975), Sun and Sail, oil on canvas (estimate: $40,000-60,000)
