Keith Richards Signed Guitar Played on the 'Some Girls' Record and Tour to Appear Live at Bonhams Online Music Memorabilia Sale

A Ted Newman Jones, custom-made telecaster-style guitar previously owned by Keith Richards and played throughout the Some Girls recording sessions, and on The Rolling Stones' 1978 American tour, will headline Bonhams Music Memorabilia sale in Los Angeles – live on from 1-15 July. It has an estimate of $80,000-120,000.

Keith Richards hired Newman Jones III to be his guitar tech for The Rolling Stones American tour in 1972. Following this, Newman produced several guitars for Richards throughout the '70s, including this guitar – which comprises of a Jones-made Telecaster-style body and a Fender rosewood Telecaster neck. Richards played the guitar throughout the Some Girls recording sessions, on the 1978 American tour, and in the music videos for the hits "Miss You" and "Far Away Eyes".

By 1981, Richards had hired former guitar tech for The Who, Alan Rogan, for The Rolling Stones' Tattoo You tour. During this time, Rogan had Los Angeles luthier David Schecter build Richards a rosewood Telecaster for the tour using the Jones Telecaster neck and a custom Schecter-made rosewood body. The Jones body was subsequently left with Schecter who refitted it with a new Telecaster-style maple neck and sold it to the current owner shortly thereafter. Richards later signed and inscribed the guitar To Doc, Love & Prescriptions when he met the vendor.

Bonhams specialist Catherine Williamson, commented; "Having been used on tour and in two music videos, this rare and custom-made guitar is an instantly recognisable piece of Keith Richards memorabilia, and is believed to be only the second Richards-owned guitar to ever appear at auction - much less one used so prominently during the beginning of the Rolling Stones' commercial peak. With only one other auction record being in 1983 for a Framus acoustic guitar, this is an opportunity is not to be missed."
