Quentin Blake Draws the Rainbow for the NHS
Bonhams Offers Ten New Drawings at Special Online Sale

Bonhams will offer ten new drawings by Sir Quentin Blake in a special online auction in aid of NHS Charities Together. 'Quentin Blake Draws the Rainbow' will feature ten exclusive new works by Blake created during the lockdown period, all taking the rainbows he has seen in people's windows as his inspiration. The auction will run from 14 May to 3 June on bonhams.com with all proceeds going directly to NHS Charities Together.

Sir Quentin Blake commented: "It seems like a time when a few straightforward jokes might not come amiss; so that as I know that people have been putting rainbows into their windows to express solidarity, I took the liberty of borrowing them. You will see that I have supposed that they are real and portable, and I hope they are optimistic too."

Bonhams specialist in Modern British and Irish Art, Janet Hardie, said: "Sir Quentin Blake is a national treasure and his work is beloved by young and old alike. Here he takes what has become a symbol of national hope and unity in this difficult time, the rainbow, and put his own signature twist on it. The characters in these drawings not only delight in the rainbow itself, but also in simple everyday pleasures: walking on a breezy day, the affection of a dog, the view from a roof, a treat on the table, or simply a cosy place to read. We are delighted to be offering these wonderful, playful works, which will hopefully make people smile – all in aid of an incredibly worthy cause."

Sir Quentin Blake is one of the nation's favourite illustrators. He is best known for his collaboration with writers such as Russell Hoban, Joan Aiken, Michael Rosen, John Yeoman and, most famously, Roald Dahl. He has received numerous awards and honours, including a knighthood for 'services to illustration' in 2013.

Bonhams is waiving all charges which means 100% of proceeds are going to the NHS Charities Covid-19 Urgent Appeal. Funds from the NHS Covid-19 appeal will help support the health and wellbeing of NHS staff and volunteers supporting Covid-19 patients in ways above and beyond which NHS funding can ordinarily provide.
