Bonhams Celebrates 40th Anniversary of California & Western Art

Joseph Raphael's Striking and Vibrant Tulip Field Highlights the Sale

Auction Date: March 17

Los Angeles – Bonhams celebrates the 40th anniversary of California & Western Art with an exceptional auction of 168 works by renowned California and Western artists on March 17 in Los Angeles. Well-represented in the sale are examples such as Society of Six painters Selden Connor Gile, August Gay, Maurice Logan, and Bernard von Eichman, and Southern California Impressionists Edgar Payne, William Wendt, Joseph Kleitsch, Elmer Wachtel, and Jack Wilkinson Smith. Highlighting the sale is a striking and vibrant painting of Tulip Field by Joseph Raphael, which has been in a private collection for nearly 40 years. It has an estimate of $150,000-250,000.

Tulip Field shows the influence of Paul Cézanne on Raphael's works in the flattened space and simplified forms of the flowers. The painting also illustrates the artist's stippling and pointillist inspirations. Brushstrokes with similar tones get smaller and tighter as the eye travels deeper into the painting. Vibrant intense reds along with scattered pinks and purple hued shadows form the tulip flowers. These hot colors are interspersed with cool creamy greenish half curved dabs to give the red hues even greater vibrance. Only in the foreground does Raphael present the observer with more defined individual flowers.

Scot Levitt, Bonhams Director of Fine Arts, commented: "We see an artist obsessed with the power and beauty of an individual flower multiplied into a landscape. It is Raphael's distinct blend of artistic influences in Tulip Field that gives us the artist's view of this magnificent post-Impressionist tapestry. It is just as striking today more than a century after it was painted."

Additional noteworthy highlights include three Frederic Remington bronze sculptures from the Estate of Barron Hilton with estimates ranging from $60,000-300,000; Elmer Wachtel's scenic view of The California Coast (estimate: $100,000-120,000); Arthur Grover Rider's Bringing in the Boat (estimate: $80,000-120,000); and Joseph Kleitsch's Geraniums in Bloom (Laguna Beach) (estimate: $60,000-80,000).
