An Exquisite Pair of 4.01 and 3.39 Carat Unheated Burmese 'Pigeon's Blood' Ruby And Diamond Pendent Earrings (lot 673) was the top selling lot at Bonhams Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite sale on 25 November, making HK$ 7,375,625 against a pre-sale estimate of HK$ 6,000,000 – 8,000,000.

In the same sale, seven exceptional art deco gem-set decorative clocks found buyers, with many of them selling for multiples of their estimate, led by An Exceptionally Fine and Rare Art Deco 'La Pendule Ecran Chinoise' Mother-Of-Pearl, Diamond, Lacquer and Enamel Table Clock, by Cartier, Circa 1930 (lot 656), which sold for HK$ 3,125,625, over five times the pre-sale estimate (HK$ 590,000 – 780,000).

Hailing from one single European private collection amassed over the past decade, the eight gem-set desk clocks are fine examples of the golden age of top clockmakers in the 1920s, including Cartier, Tiffany, and Vacheron Constantin. Perfectly preserved for a century, they each boast unique application and ornamentation of gemstones, and are testament to the workmanship and popular aesthetic from a long-gone era. Among the highlights were:

A Distinct and Exceptional Art Deco Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Diamond and Enamel 'Chinoiserie' Desk Clock, by Tiffany & Co., Circa 1929 (Lot 657). Sold for HK$ 1,313,125, doubling the pre-sale estimate (HK$ 590,000 –780,000).

Jean Ghika, Global Head of Jewellery at Bonhams, commented on the sale: 'The strong results show that rare and quality pieces fresh to the market continue to be hotly contested by collectors seeking the very best. The spirited bidding was global, with strong participation from Asia, especially Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China.'
