Exquisite 'Pigeon's Blood' Ruby Earrings Headline Bonhams Hong Kong Jewellery Sale

Hong Kong – Bonhams Hong Kong Jewels and Jadeite Sale on 25 November will be led by an Exquisite Pair of 4.01 and 3.39 Carat Unheated Burmese 'Pigeon's Blood' Ruby And Diamond Pendent Earrings (Estimate: HK$6,000,000 - 8,000,000; pictured above left).

The term 'pigeon's blood' is applied to stones with a strong saturation of colour, a natural red fluorescence, and superior quality. Examples are amongst the rarest of all gemstones. While rubies of this superlative colour can be found in different localities, the current pair on offer – both without heat treatment – come from the most preferred region of Mogok, Burma.

The sale will also present a group of eight exceptional art deco gem-set decorative clocks. Hailing from one single European private collection amassed over the past decade, the eight mechanical desk clocks are representative of the golden age of top clockmakers in the 1920s, including Cartier, Tiffany, and Vacheron Constantin.

Perfectly preserved for a century, they each boast unique application and ornamentation of gemstones, and are testament to the workmanship and popular aesthetic from a long-gone era.

Notable pieces include:

A Distinct And Exceptional Art Deco Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Diamond And Enamel 'Chinoiserie' Desk Clock, By Tiffany & Co., Circa 1929 (estimate: HK$590,000 - 780,000; pictured above right). The finely carved jadeite doors open to a colourful painted-enamel dial depicting a Chinese landscape with a heron and gazelle in a pond-garden.

An Exceptionally Fine And Rare Art Deco 'La Pendule Ecran Chinoise' Mother-Of-Pearl, Diamond, Lacquer And Enamel Table Clock, By Cartier, Circa 1930 (estimate: HK$590,000 - 780,000). Designed as a vertical Chinese screen, the rectangular mother-of-pearl inlaid dial depict Chinese warriors on horses-in-motion.

Jean Ghika, Global Head of Jewellery at Bonhams, commented: 'We are privileged to offer these eight exquisite clocks. Each exceptional bejewelled timepiece is a celebration of art deco craftsmanship.

'There is an increased demand for fine quality rubies on the market at the moment, particularly in Asia because of the auspicious red colour. We are therefore delighted to headline our Hong Kong sale with an exceptional pair of "pigeon's blood" ruby earrings.'
