Bidding All Over The World

One of British Rock Music's Most Recognised Guitars Belonging to Status Quo's Francis Rossi in Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia Sale

One of British rock music's most recognised guitars – the green Fender Telecaster belonging to Status Quo's Francis Rossi OBE – will be offered for auction in the Entertainment Memorabilia Sale at Bonhams Knightsbridge on Tuesday 17 December, with an estimate of £100,000 - 150,000. It has been in the musician's ownership for more than 50 years.

Purchased second-hand in Glasgow by Rossi in 1968 for £75, the Fender was used extensively for live and studio work, most notably appearing in arguably the band's most high-profile performance, the globally aired 'Live Aid' concert at London's Wembley Stadium in 1985. Status Quo was the opening act of the concert, which had an audience of 1.9 billion, almost 40 per cent of the world's population at the time.

Originally a standard 'sunburst' model, the Fender has been modified by Francis over the years, firstly having its finish removed for a natural look, before being painted black. However Francis, still not happy with this incarnation, then decided to sand the back and front down, creating his famous custom green finish for the front with furniture paint and leaving the back as bare wood.

Francis' Fender has been an integral part of Status Quo's history, from being played on 'Down the Dustpipe' in 1970, and then on virtually every one of the band's singles and albums up to 2015. The guitar also featured in the majority of the band's 6,000 live shows to date, with a total audience of some 25 million people - including in 1991 when Status Quo set a Guinness World Record, playing four British concerts in just 11 hours and 11 minutes - before being retired by Francis in 2015.

Francis Rossi said: "The green Tele served me extremely well for almost 50 years and I'm always amazed when I look back and realise what a chequered history we had together."

Claire Tole-Moir, Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia specialist, said: "We are very excited to be offering such a legendary guitar belonging to one of rock music's most recognised and prolific figures. We are sure that this unique lot will be the subject of much bidding all over the world."

Francis Rossi's Fender will go under the hammer on 17 December 2019 at the Knightsbridge sale room.
