Top Prices at Bonhams Antique Arms, Armour and Modern Sporting Guns Sales

A fine J. Purdey 20-bore over-and-under gun was the top selling lot at Bonhams Modern Sporting Gun sale in London on 23 May making £51,313 against a pre-sale estimate of £25,000-35,000. Part II of the Max Gau Collection attracted competitive bidding from the UK, Europe and the US. At the Antique Arms and Armour sale held on the same day, an unusual cased set of four flintlock pistols, including a pair of 24-bore flintlock duelling pistols and a pair of 120-bore Liège box-lock pocket pistols, sold for £15,688, having been estimated at £8,000-10,000.

The two sales made a combined total of more than £1,000,000.

Modern Sporting Guns

- A pair of Lee-engraved 12-bore round-action ejector guns by David McKay Brown. Sold for £31,313 (£20,000-30,000).

- A Winchester .44-40 'Model 1873 One of One Thousand' lever-action rifle. Sold for £25,062 (£20,000-25,000)

- A Winchester .44-40 'Model 1873' deluxe factory engraved lever-action saddle-ring carbine. Sold for £18,813 (£15,000-20,000)

Antique Arms and Armour

- A 14-bore flintlock silver-mounted sporting gun. Sold for £14,438 (£6,000-9,000)

- A cased pair of 40-bore percussion duelling pistols. Sold for £12,563 (£6,000-8,000)
