New Auction World Record for Pioneering Female Iranian Artist

A new world record price at auction for a work by the pioneering Iranian female artist Behjat Sadr (1924-2009) was set at Bonhams Modern & Contemporary Middle Eastern Art Sale in London on Wednesday 1 May. Untitled (Abstract Movement in Black) sold for £93,813, having had an estimate of £50,000-70,000. The sale made a total of £1,390,676.

Bonhams Director of Middle Eastern Art Nima Sagharchi said: "This was a seminal piece by one of the founding artists of abstract art in Iran. Untitled (Abstract Movement in Black) is a masterful rendition of Behjat Sadr's signature style, and the most significant of her works yet to appear at auction. I was not surprised that it excited such interest, nor achieved such an impressive record-setting price."

A new world record was also established for a work by the Sudanese painter Ahmad Shibrain (1931-2017). Untitled (Khartoum forms) sold for £37,562.50 (estimate £15,000-20,000)

Other highlights included:

- Untitled (from the Tree Trunk Series) by the Iranian artist Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980). Sold for £187,563 (estimate: £100,000-200,000)

- Composition No. 104 by the Lebanese painter Shafic Abboud (1926-2004). Sold for £112,563 (estimate £100,000-150,000).
